Read along

Hey explorers! Look out the window. We're ON the Golden Gate Bridge! Wanna know a secret? Not so long ago, before your grandma's grandma was grown up, people said nobody could ever build a bridge here.

The wind was too wild, the fog was too thick, and the water was deep and swirly. But a bridge builder named Joseph Strauss said, "We can do it!" So workers climbed way, way up the towers, taller than forty giraffes standing on each other's heads! They spun the giant cables out of teeny-tiny wires. So many wires that if you lined them all up, they'd wrap around the whole Earth three times!

And here's my favorite part. They hung a giant net under the bridge, like a circus net, to catch anybody who slipped. It caught nineteen workers, and they called themselves the Halfway to Hell Club!

Quiz the back seat

Quick question! The Golden Gate Bridge isn't really gold. What color is it?

Show the answer

Orange. Orange! It's called International Orange, and it was picked so ships could see the bridge in the fog. And the "Golden Gate" is really the name of the water underneath it!

Fun facts

  • Built 1933 to 1937.
  • The towers rise about 746 feet above the water.
  • The main cables hold about 80,000 miles of wire.
  • A safety net saved 19 workers: the Halfway to Hell Club.
