The Place Where Wood Is Cut. A true story near Corte Madera, CA, told for kids 3-12.

Read along
We're driving through Corte Madera. That's a Spanish name, and it means "the place where wood is cut". A long time ago, Spanish soldiers lived in a fort across the bay in San Francisco, called the Presidio. They needed wood for their cooking fires and for building.
And there weren't many trees over there! So they rowed across the bay and came here to cut wood for their fires and for building. Chop, chop, chop! That's how a whole town got its name.
If you had to name a town after something you do, what would it be? The place where kids eat pancakes?
